Summit View Ct.

by Mandy Prell

I show off the beautiful cage I built to my friends and call it a housewarming party. We parade in socks on the luxury plank flooring and marvel at the black granite, painted doors, brass knobs, farmhouse sink, and fireplace surrounded by chalky blue tile. I lead, like the field commander of a marching band, pointing out the 1920’s dowery chest I use as a side table. Paperwork inside listed Helen, the woman for sale. We troop outside to delight in the deck. A silhouette of thick, shadowed trees in the distance. I’ve seen fawns at the edge, I comment, and rabbits. Frogs seduce me each evening as fireflies sparkle the sky. The matriarchal moon kindles owl feathers among the sharp pines. Everything I love is far away.
