Magic Mirror

Ashley Gilland

The present is finally moving again. Before, I liked to use the calendar as a conveyor belt as it moved further and further from me           but until then I’m reeling in the biggest fish I’ve ever seen.             Today, I reel.

have you been in the position

of coaxing the future lagging underfoot

            dog too hot under sun

the shadow of the tree cool in the grass

double vision next to   before

ponqlǝ ʌᴉsᴉou uǝxʇ ʇo qǝɟoɹǝ

So when my hands cover my face, remember I’m a grandfather clock

drop the leash and go

only the cogs can move on.

from dread of the grimy present,

I received nostalgia for the cozy prior.

instead of spared a reflection,

˙ʎɹoɯǝɯ ɐ pǝɹɐds ɯɐ I

you’re upside-down in the spoon

you thwack it, hard, on the wall, on the mantle,

on a loose child’s gourd head.

have you ever been

            deeply deceived?
